The installation of infrared heaters in new buildings is permitted throughout Austria. We have provided a clear overview of minimum requirements for approval. Vorarlberg

New buildings and renovation projects

  • Infrared heating for heating rooms
  • Auxiliary heat producer for space heating
  • Domestic hot water heat pump
  • Photovoltaic system
  • Condition: CO2 emission ≤13 kg/m²a

New buildings with housing subsidies

  • Only eligible as auxiliary heating if its output is a maximum of 20% of overall heat output and takes up less than 8 W/m² of the actual living area.
  • Infrared heating is not eligible for subsidisation as the main heating system in buildings with carbon dioxide emissions of more than 8kg/m²a.

Restoration and renovation with housing subsidies

  • Infrared heating is eligible for subsidisation as the main heating system. Vorarlberg’s subsidisation of renovations does not specify any requirements for the heating system.

Tyrol

  • Infrared heating is subsidised if no alternative heating is possible or makes better sense.

Restoration and renovation with housing subsidies

  • Heating systems are not assessed for subsidisation when individual building components are to be renovated. Infrared heating is not eligible for subsidisation in comprehensive renovation projects according to the renovation guidelines.

Upper Austria

  • Infrared heating systems may be installed in new buildings according to a state decree on the condition that the overall energy efficiency factor for infrared heating is lower than the overall energy efficiency factor for air-to-water heat pumps.

  • Infrared heating is eligible for subsidisation as auxiliary heating.
  • Infrared heating is not eligible for subsidisation as the main heating system.

Restoration and renovation with housing subsidies

  • Infrared heating is eligible for subsidisation as auxiliary heating.
  • Infrared heating is not eligible for subsidisation as the main heating system.

Styria

  • The installation of an infrared heating system is eligible for subsidisation as the main heating system if the heating demands of the building are ≤10 kWh/m²a.

Restoration and renovation with housing subsidies

  • An existing heating system is not assessed for subsidisation when considering individual building component renovation. The replacement of an existing heating system with infrared heating is not eligible for subsidisation.

Lower Austria

  • According to the 2019 Lower Austrian Housing Subsidy Guidelines, installation of an infrared heating system as the main heating system is eligible for subsidisation.

Restoration and renovation with housing subsidies

  • An existing heating system is not assessed for subsidisation when considering individual building component renovation. The replacement of an existing heating system with infrared heating is not eligible for subsidisation.
